Dead Sea

Location:  Between Jordan and Israel.

The Dead Sea, also called the Salt Sea, is a salt lake bordering Jordan to the east and Israel and the West bank to the west. It is called the Dead Sea because its salinity prevents the existence of any life forms in the lake.  Its surface and shores are 423 metres (1,388 ft) below sea level, Earth’s lowest elevation on land. The main attraction of the Dead Sea is of course the soothing, abnormally salty water itself. The salt content of the water is 31.5% making the water so buoyant that it is impossible for the visitor to sink. The water also contains 21 minerals including high levels of magnesium, sodium, potassium, and bromine and 12 of these minerals are found in no other body of water in the world.

It is fun when you are not able to sink!

The Dead Sea has attracted visitors from around the Mediterranean basin for thousands of years. It was one of the world’s first health resorts and it has been the supplier of a wide variety of products, from balms for Egyptian mummification topotash for fertilizers. People use the salt and minerals from the Dead Sea to create cosmetics and herbal sachets.
